Its been 5 years since Ive added to our Ts History. A mellow, relaxing, uneventful five years... right... living easy, coasting, resting on our laurels, right! Wrong! Where to begin... ok, lets start with Ts in East Greenwich. We opened the doors in EG, on March 21, 2008, to a moderate crowd of inquisitive people. Some were regulars from the Cranston area wishing us well, some were transplants, living in EG welcoming us with open arms, and some were just hungry. Well, we got through that week just fine and come to think of it, business was running quite smoothly. Until the A/C crashed in the middle of a heat wave... oh right, the stock market also crashed. You remember, the financial markets plummeted, real estate values with it and un-employment skyrocketed.
We were, as most everyone in RI, and the whole country for that matter, fearful about the future. We just invested a half million dollars into a new venture and now this. As a company we felt more than ever that we needed to stay positive. Positive in all aspects of our lives, the business part, our home lives, and in our community. We truly felt that if ever Ts was needed as a positive place to go and be with others, to talk and be heard by neighbors, or just to sit and be filled with great energy, it was now.
Behind the scenes we started working on a new menu, new flavors, plating, health conscious offerings, allergy alerts, kids menus that were fun, flavorful and more growth friendly. Community involvement became more than a catch phrase. We began some grass roots contributing, kids sports, art programs, elderly care, etc. We sponsored road races and golf tournaments and donated food to the RI Community food bank, to special needs of our community family. We reached out to our staff and
helped where needed.
Tina and I received a letter from the RI Hospitality Association. We had been voted Restaurateurs of the year in RI. WOW. Really. What an honor to be recognized at the RI Convention Center by 500 of your piers. Imagine, with all of the great restaurants in RI, Tina and I, were recognized with this top honor.
That same year we were also contacted by the National Restaurant Association to be included in a national campaign. We were to be included in a nationally distributed movie, along with 10 others, honoring the industry. So the film crew came from Seattle and spent a day with Tina and I. What a blast. Another honor and, yes Ill say it, a feather in our Ts cap. Even with all of these accolades, Tina, Mark and I, along with our kids, knew we had to maintain our grass roots. Stay close to the guest, you, the reason for the T. And we constantly, through high and low, busy and slow, remind each other of the very important YOU.Fall 2010
The casual search for another Ts begins... and rumors and request hit an all time high. “Will you consider the East Bay, pleaseeeee” read one comment card. At the Ts counter in Cranston, a regular said the she heard we were opening in Middletown. Smithfield, Attleboro, East Providence, Warwick, Coventry... we began our search. Signing a purchase and sales agreements in Attleboro and North Providence, nothing came to fruition.
Then as casual as can be (2012) Mark was told by our carpet cleaner that we may want to look at the Red Stripe in Narragansett. Our first reaction was not positive, and after looking inside we really felt it would cost far too much to re-model. That was the first hurdle... the lease was the second. Then with our backs to the wall, and the 4th of July glaring at us, we opened Ts Narragansett on June 22, 2012. OMG, where did they all come from, I mean we unlocked the doors, and they came. We were ready, well almost... how could we train a staff of 40 in 3 weeks and have them ready for “The Summer in Gansett” We knew we would be busy in the summer, but we really knew that we needed to listen and pay attention to the LOCALS. Because, the locals are the ones that will be there year round. As I write we are coming toward our second summer season and according to the many happy locals... “We did Good!”December 2013
At the 24th Annual Meeting of the RI Hospitality Association, T's Breakfast Brunch Lunch received a National Restaurant Association Restaurant Neighbor Award. This honor recognizes T's commitment to giving back to the communities they serve.
All three locations have experienced growth, even through this recession. Our company has continued to maintain our motto... “Be Brilliant at the Basics”. Ts has, during the worst recession since the Great Depression, hired a total of 80 new employees. While others were laying off and closings doors, we insisted on moving forward. Our staff is the very best, but you already know that. Hospitality to the greatest degree. Warm hellos. enthusiastic greetings, real people enjoying the company of our guests. Come on, whats better than that. We CARE... really!
